NORLA expanding its activities
NORLA is expanding its activities to developing countries, using project funds from the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
After 30 years of operation, NORLA is well-established in the western world, book sales are increasing and new activities allow NORLA to increasingly contribute to the development of a necessary and important dialogue.
During the course of the first two years, NORLA has experienced great interest and tangible, positive results. NORLA is attempting to include a variety of central partners. However, when attempting to break into new markets, there is always the problem of a lack of competent translators from Norwegian to other languages. Finding, stimulating and perfecting translation talents from Norwegian is thus at the heart of NORLA's activities.
India
During the course of a short period of time, several well-known and important authors, such as Lars Saabye Christensen, have been sold to Indian publishers for publication in Hindi. NORLA has financed an anthology of 10 Norwegian contemporary authors in Hindi, as well as two textbooks for children by Eirik Newth which were launched during the book fair in Dehli in February 2008 by Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg. Several Norwegian authors, such as Dag Solstad, Hanne Ørstavik, Per Petterson and Karin Fossum will imminently be ready for publication in Hindi.
Arab
In December 2007, NORLA arranged a seminar about cultural cooperation with Arab countries at The House of Literature in Oslo. Over 50 delegates including central, international publishers with special expertise in Arab literature participated at the seminar. NORLA has also taken part in the book fair in Cairo in both 2008 and in 2010.
China
Although NORLA has initially chosen to concentrate its activities towards the Arab and Indian market, developments in China are being monitored with interest. NORLA supported a sizeable book lounch for Jostein Gaarder in China in Autumn 2007, which was a great success. This indicates the presence of a major, exciting and complex market which NORLA intends to pursue in the future.
